How Aromatherapy Benefits Seniors

Aromatherapy is a type of alternative medicine known to improve a person’s mood and overall health. Besides helping elderlies calm down and relax, it can also alleviate symptoms of illnesses like dementia and respiratory infections, soothe discomforts from bodily pains as well as promote a healthier blood circulation and skin regeneration. It involves oils distilled from plants long used for their medicinal properties.

Some of the commonly used plants in aromatherapy are lavender, rose and lemon. Apart from sharing a mood-enhancing effect in general, these plants also provide distinct health benefits. For instance, lavender is known to induce sleep and is particularly helpful for elderlies with insomnia. Whereas, lemon helps lower blood pressure and improves concentration and memory. Rose, on the other hand, have antibacterial properties on top of being a beauty tool that enhances complexions.

Aromatherapy can be introduced to the body not just by direct application but also through inhalation. The best way to do this is through the use of a home fragrance diffuser. Basically, essential oils are diffused into the air in the form vaporized molecules. These vapors then stimulates odor receptors in the nose that are directly connected to the brain’s limbic system, a part responsible for the processing of moods, emotions and memory.

When buying home fragrance diffuser for aromatherapy, consider reeds over candles. They can be left in a corner doing their job of dispersing essential oil vapors without necessarily using flame, making your senior’s home both relaxing and safe.
